Week 4
Here are some highlights from the week...
In writer's workshop, we started our Small Moments unit. The students are practicing the writing process and working on "zooming in" through their narrative writing. We have learned and been practicing the first two steps in the writing process: Think of an idea & Plan (touch, tell, sketch and write). When you are writing at home with your first grader, encourage them to plan out their writing before they start. This involves touching and telling the story out on the paper before writing. Ask your first grader to show you their invisible pencil!
Our Room 112 mathematicians have been warming up their brains every day with a story problem. They have been practicing their problem solving strategies by using pictures, numbers, words, number lines and number bonds, etc. The story problems feature our Room 112 first graders and Stephenson staff. You can try this at home and see their amazing math skills at work!
Ex: Ms. Soulas had 10 pencils. She gave some away. Now she has 4. How many pencils did she give away?
We have also been working on building our number sense and fluency with building ten. We have been playing games like 10 or Bust, and Make 10 Go Fish - these are games you can play at home, ask your first grader to teach you!
We ended the week with a little Mystery Science! This week, students were introduced to the idea that the natural world can provide insights for designing products to meet human needs. Students examined the structures of trees that keep them from blowing down in the wind, using their observations to design umbrellas that could stay up in a strong wind.
You can share another amazing story with your child of how living things can guide the design of man-made materials: the invention of Velcro! This video describes the structure of “hook and loop fasteners” and how the idea for Velcro came from looking closely at seeds, similar to how students’ ideas for improved umbrellas came from looking at trees. http://safeYouTube.net/w/JUBb
Reminders:
9/17 - 10/3 -- Run for the Arts Pledge Period
9/25 -- Picture Day
9/26 -- Lockdown drill
*Lots of flyers in the Go Home folders this week, so make sure to check them!
