Week 6
Here are some highlights from the week...
In Reader's Workshop, we reviewed picking books that are a "good fit" for us! They are not too hard, not too easy, but just right! This can be a challenging task, but the first graders did an excellent job identifying when a book might be too hard or too easy. We will continue to practice and reinforce picking and reading "good fit" books throughout the year.
*** Our current focus when picking books that are just right.
0 - 1 tricky words on a page = too easy

4 - 5 tricky words on a page = give it a try
5 or more tricky words on a page = goal book
When we get to tricky words in our JUST RIGHT books, we work to solve them! Sometimes we can have some bad habits when solving words, but when we know what they are, we can drop them and pick up good habits instead! We focused on dropping those bad reading habits and picking up good habits.

Some good reading habits that we want to pick up are:
- Check the picture
- Look at ALL the parts of a word
- Flip the sound
- Check-it (does it look right, does it sound right, does it make sense)
When you are reading at home, make sure that your first grader is dropping those bad habits and practicing those good habits!
Our mystery science lesson on Friday was “Why do birds have beaks?” We did an activity to learn how the shape of a bird’s beak tells you something about what that particular bird eats.
The week ended with a wet Run For the Arts! Just like the first graders having been practicing their reading and writing stamina, they got a chance to show off their running stamina as well!
Our mystery science lesson on Friday was “Why do birds have beaks?” We did an activity to learn how the shape of a bird’s beak tells you something about what that particular bird eats.
- You can continue to support your child’s curiosity at home! Any time you see a bird, whether on a walk or looking out the window, encourage your child to look and ask them what they think that bird might eat and why. If it’s possible, set up a bird feeder near your home. This will give you and your child frequent opportunities to observe birds together.
Thanks for the great update! Very helpful to have something specific to work on while we're reading together. Going to work on supporting those good habits!
