Week 11

Here are some highlights from the week...

In reading we are continuing to practice strategies for decoding tricky words. Our main focus has been identifying when there is a tricky word and solving it right away. The first graders are working hard to build their stamina - reading longer and stronger! Here are some strategies to reinforce when your first grader is reading at home:

  • Check the picture
  • Look at all of the parts of the word
  • Try it 2 ways (flip the sound)
  • Check-it and do a double check (does it look right? sound right? make sense?)
  • Get a running start
  • Context (use the words around the word to figure it out)

We wrapped up our Small Moment Narrative writing unit! It is amazing to see how the first grader's stories have come to life. They are identifying craft moves that authors use to make their writing stronger, and they are applying them in their own writing!

A couple weeks ago, our mystery science focused on how to use the sun as a tool. Well, since it's getting darker earlier, our mystery science this week was all about using the stars to help you if you're lost! It was a read-a-long story that focused on how to find the north star using the big dipper. So, if you happen to be stargazing this weekend - challenge your first grader to find the North Star!

The first graders decorated place-mats for Meals on Wheels. We feel honored that we get to provide place-mats for Meals on Wheels and all of the wonderful people who get to use them for their Thanksgiving dinners.
