Week 18
Here are some highlights from the week...
We have started our new reading unit! We are going to be focusing on reading, decoding and comprehending non-fiction text. In this unit we get to soar through space, swim in the sea, travel around the world and study lots of different topics - here we go!
We ended the week with a 3-D shape art project! Our calendar this month has a growing 3-D shape pattern, and for our art project we were inspired by Andy Warhol's Campbells Soup Art. In first grade we CAN do anything we put our mind to - including making pop art cylinder cans!
As we get back into school mode after winter break we are really practicing active listening. Here are some activities you can do at home to practice and support your kiddo's listening skills:
In science, the geologists were introduced to Sedimentary Rocks. They were given a cup of river rocks and different sized screens to sort the rocks by size. They identified pebbles, gravel and sand and after sorting them glued them into their rock journal!

For writing, the first graders spent time writing thoughtful cards for Mr.Galindo. We discussed the value and importance of making cards personal - and wow, did they do it. I was so impressed with what they came up with and I know that Mr. Galindo will appreciate all of the time, love and care put into the cards.
As we get back into school mode after winter break we are really practicing active listening. Here are some activities you can do at home to practice and support your kiddo's listening skills:
- Use a "talking stick" at meal times or family times to reinforce who is the speaker and who is the listener.
- Sit back to back and have one person describe a picture and the other person draw it.
- Simon Says
- Telephone
- Do 3! To play, take turns giving three directions to follow (ex. jump up and down, draw a heart, hold up a green crayon). One person is the "teller" and one is the "doer" - then you switch roles. Great way to practice following multiple directions, and the kiddos will love getting the chance to tell you 3 things to do!
