Week 19

It was a busy week in Room 112...

In math this week we have been  extending students’ kindergarten experiences with direct length comparison to indirect comparison. The length of one object is used to compare the lengths of two other objects.  Longer than and shorter than are taken to a new level of precision by introducing the idea of a length unit.  Students have been exploring the usefulness of measuring with similar units. We also logged into Moby Max (an adaptive math app). The students took a placement test and will be accessing it throughout the rest of the year for some extra math practice at their level.

We met with our buddies on Wednesday. As you know, we have been studying rocks in Room 112 and the 4th graders have been reading about natural disasters. We combined both of those subjects in our Mystery Science about volcanoes. We learned about volcanoes and where they exist in the world. The buddies got the coordinates of different volcanoes around the world and plotted the points on their maps. From their maps they were able to recognize patterns and better understand the formation and location of volcanoes. Below I’ve included a link to some amazing pictures of active volcanoes. The could be fun to check out and discuss with your kiddo.

In science this week we did an experiment with sand. The first grade geologists used the sand that we sifted out from the river rocks and put it in a vial with water. They made observations about the dry sand and then made observations after they added the water. Finally, they made predictions about what would happen to the sand and water when it was left over night. We will have to wait to see on Wednesday!

Finally, in honor of Martin Luther King Day we read different stories about him, watched a video and  We had a great discussion about "what makes a great leader." Some of the answers were: "Great leaders have strong hearts" "They are respectful and responsible" "They care about people" "They are brave" "They persevere." After hearing their thoughtful responses, I pointed out that many of the qualities they shared are things we have included in our class promise - meaning that Room 112 is full of leaders. The future is in good hands :)

We also found and copied a poem that will hopefully continue to spread the message of Martin Luther King Jr. Ask your first grader to share it! I have also included a picture of it so you can read it together on here!

Here is a fun activity to practice spelling at home!

Materials:

  • Paper and pencil
  • Crayons or markers
  • Index cards with spelling words written individually on them

1. Make a “Secret Code.” Ask your child to write down the entire alphabet, leaving space  between and underneath each letter.  Tell them that they are going to create  a code that will enable the two of you to communicate secretly. Once they've written the entire alphabet, it's time to assign each letter a number. Underneath the A, ask your child to write the number 1.  The number 2 goes under the B, and so on. When the code is completed, the letter Z should have the number 26  underneath it.
2. For each word, ask your child to write the letter underneath the number on the index card and then move on to the next number.  Continue until the whole word has been changed into letters.  For example, if the word is "stand", the index card would look like this:
19   20   1   14   4
S     T     A    N   D
Continue with the next spelling word. Once your child has deciphered all their words, and practiced spelling them, give your child a new spy challenge! Ask them to use the code to write a sentence for you and see if you can decode it.  For example, if they wrote:

9       12-15-22-5         25-15-21       13-15-13 it becomes, "I love you, Mom!" Keep the code handy so that you can write each other secret messages in the future, whenever the mood strikes. And don't be surprised if this becomes a favorite way to practice spelling!
