Week 28
Here are some highlights from the week...
We made it through the first week back from spring break! The transition back into "school mode" can always be tricky, but the first graders worked hard and are now "almost second graders!"
In reading this week, we have been reviewing all of the tools in our tricky word toolbelts, and putting them in our tool box! We now have so many tools to help us solve words, that they no longer fit in a tool belt! These decoding strategies are beginning to be more automatic for first graders as they are reading.
I really encourage you to have your first grader continue using Lexia at home. The program is a great way to reinforce the decoding strategies, spelling patterns and word building that we're doing in class. There are directions for how to access Lexia at home on the Learning at Home page.
In writing, the opinion writers are using their persuasive powers to write reviews (books, movies, restaurants, etc.). You can support this at home by writing reviews for movies you watch, books you read, or food you eat!
What You Need:
5 picture books your child knows well
Appropriate props (optional)
What You Do:
1. Select five of your first grader's favorite picture books.
2. Read three of the books you selected.
3. Say,"Now I'm going to act out one of these books."
4. Act out the storyline for one of the three books you read. You may communicate through gestures, actions, sounds, and props, but no words.
5. Ask,"Can you guess which book it is?"
6. Allow your child to guess. Offer hints if necessary.
7. Read the remaining two books together.
8. Place the four books that have not been acted out in front of your child.Say,"Pick one of these books, but don't tell me which one it is.Act it out and see if I can guess the right book."
9. Allow your first grader to act out the book while you try to guess which one it is.
