Week 29

Here are some highlights from the week...

On Tuesday, the first graders earned a reward for their amazing effort and behavior while Ms.Mcgrady was here. The first graders had been working so hard, I thought they deserved to play hard! One of the 1st grade authors wrote an opinion piece about how "Slime is the best toy,"  and I was convinced through the power of her persuasive writing - so, we made some! It turned out to be a different consistency, more like "thinking putty," but we discussed how experiments can get different results. But we still got to have a slimy afternoon!

With our buddies this week we learned about the brain’s role in receiving information from the senses, processing that information, and then controlling the body's muscles to enable movement. We played a game in which we tested our reflexes. The fact that our reflexes always have a slight delay helped your child to see that there are real pathways (nerves) on which messages from the brain have to travel.

One thing you can do to support your child’s curiosity is to play a round of the “reflex” game together at home. All you need is a ruler or cooking spoon—ask your child to explain the rules of the game to you. Ask your child about the “dollar bill” challenge too! As you play these games, there's an opportunity for a great discussion about how the brain requires time to send a message to your fingers.

We had our first Junior achievement session with, Ms. Tiffany Hammer. She taught the kiddos all about the difference between wants and needs. Although toys and candy might sometimes seem like needs, the first graders did a great job distinguishing the difference!

Our week ended with a big performance! The 3-5 graders did a dance performance and the K-2 students got to do their music performance! It was a fun way to end our week :)
