Week 32

Here are some highlights from the week...

We started our week with a powerful book and activity. Famous author, Peter H. Reynolds, just came out with a new book. His newest book, "Say Something," 'emphasizes the fact that every voice is important, regardless of age, and that you can say something in all sorts of ways—with your voice, with your art, with your poetry, with your courage, and even with your presence.'

To honor this message, we had the first graders "Say something." They thought about what they would want to say to inspire, heal or change the world. Every student blew me away with their thoughtfulness, compassion and creativity! We entered a sweepstakes and the winning school gets a visit from Peter H. Reynolds and he paints a mural at the school. However, even if we don't end up winning the contest, we still got to share our amazing voices and words!

For our realistic fiction stories, we first have to imagine a character, name our character and think about an adventure that our character could go on. It is exciting to see all of their imaginations come to life in this fun new unit!

The first grade farmers have been busy adding to their farms and calculating costs. They are hard at work earning money and calculating costs using multiples of 5's and 10's.

While we should celebrate and take care of the Earth everyday, we celebrated Earth day on Friday by reading one of my favorite tales, "The Flight of the Hummingbird" and picking up litter on the playground.
