Week 34

From 90 degree weather, to rain, it must be spring in Oregon! To celebrate the season, we did a mystery science with our 4th grade buddies. Some of you may have already received your blooming flowers, but I have attached the link so you can try at home!

The first grade farmers had a great time at Plumper Pumpkin Farm! They got to learn about bees, plant pumpkin seeds, go on a hayride and see lots of animals! A HUGE thank you to the parent chaperones -- the field trip would not have been possible without you!

On top of going to the farm, the first grade mathematicians have been busy working on their own farms. They are filled with goats, sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and horses! To calculate their payments, the mathematicians have been adding double digit numbers together. They have been breaking the numbers apart into tens and ones and adding them back together.

In science, we are going through the engineering process: Ask, imagine, plan, create, improve. Through this, we have been learning about biomimicry (design based on nature). After seeing examples, we discussed different problems we face on a day-to-day basis (backpacks falling of the hook, water bottles leaking, pencils not staying sharp, etc.) Based on the problems we came up with, we are looking to the natural world for inspiration for solutions. The creativity and ingenuity is amazing to see!
